The Forum on specification & Design Languages (FDL) is a well-established international forum devoted to the dissemination of research results, practical experiences and new ideas in the application of specification, design, and verification languages to the design, modeling, and verification of integrated circuits, complex hardware/software embedded systems, and mixed-technology systems. Modeling and specification concepts push the development of new design and verification methodologies to the system level thus providing means for model-driven design of complex information processing systems in a variety of application domains. One of the principal advantages of FDL is that it brings together four related thematic areas and gives an opportunity to gain up-to-date knowledge in many broad areas of the fast evolving field of system design and verification.

FDL is pleased to present this year a continuous dedicated track targeted to industry attendees in parallel to the well-established scientific track. This industry track consists of special sessions and tutorials. Furthermore, the European SystemC Users' Group Meeting will take place at FDL. Thus, FDL 2013 presents a unique chance for industrial participants to combine continuous training in state-of-the-art industrial-proven specification/design/verification languages, their associated design methods, tools, and standards for the design of electronic systems with the opportunity to learn about the latest research results in this field. This continues and strengthens the Forum’s role of being a place to learn and exchange about experiences applying these languages, methodologies, and tools, current best practices as well as to discuss current challenges, which need to be addressed in the future. Renowned methodology specialists and system designers will be present throughout the three days and will present their work.

FDL 2013 is a conference in a very successful series. Past FDLs took place in Lausanne, Lyon, Tuebingen, Marseille, Frankfurt/Main, Lille, Darmstadt, Barcelona, Stuttgart, Sophia Antipolis, Southampton, Oldenburg, and Vienna. Like in the past years, a social event will give you the chance to continue your discussions and increase your professional network. During a boat trip on the Seine, you will discover the most famous monuments of Paris from an unusual perspective. The evening will continue in an institution of Parisian gastronomy: the restaurant Nos Ancêtres les Gaulois, where you will enjoy a particularly rich meal in a medieval, authentic, and festive atmosphere.

FDL 2013 is organized by ECSI in technical cooperation with the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA), the French chapters of the IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Circuit and System Society as well as the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The FDL proceedings will be made available online after the conference in the ECSI Resource Center and will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore.

We would like to thank the large number of contributors to FDL: the authors of the submitted papers, the 62 members of the technical program committee, our keynote speakers Pieter J. Mosterman, Twan Basten, and Quang-Huy Nguyen, our invited speaker Marleen Boonen as well as our technical area chairs and industrial special session chairs. We would like to acknowledge the organizational support provided our colleagues from the Laboratoire d’Informatique de Paris 6 (LIP6), the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS).

We look forward to welcoming you to FDL!
